OeAW - Discovering the future

As a central non-university institution for science and research, the Austrian Academy of Sciences - OeAW has the task of "promoting science in every respect". Founded in 1847 as a learned society, it now has over 760 members and around 1,800 employees dedicated to innovative basic research, interdisciplinary knowledge exchange and the dissemination of new insights.

The OeAW initiates and maintains partnerships worldwide and represents Austria in international scientific organizations; it cooperates with numerous institutions in the scientific field in order to actively shape the research landscape.

PHD STUDENT POSITION (F/M/X)

Job ID: ESI014DOC225

The Erich Schmid Institute of Materials Science (ESI) the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), Austria’s leading non-university research and science institution, is offering a PHD STUDENT POSITION (F/M/X)

(Teilzeit) 10h-20h per week in the Austrian Science Fund project “Toughening nitride ceramic coatings with nanotwin design” for a fixed term appointment of 3 years.

Your Tasks

For several decades, toughening transition metal nitride (TMN) ceramic coatings has been one of the central goals in materials science and the coating community in order to improve brittleness and avoid catastrophic failure during applications.
In this project, we aim to develop a new strategy to toughen TMN coatings significantly, subsequently increasing the damage tolerance. The approach we proposed is, for the first time, to introduce a high density of nanotwins into the nitride ceramic coatings by selecting relatively lower stacking fault energy nitrides as starting materials and combining to optimize the deposition conditions and achieve designing high-density nanotwins-mediated ceramic coatings with superior mechanical properties.

Ultimately, we aim to achieve strong yet tough nitride coatings for industrial applications.

The successful candidate will be part of a team whose research activities focus on the microstructure and atomic structure characterization of nanotwinned nitride ceramics using advanced TEM techniques (Cs-corrected HRTEM/STEM/EELS), atom probe tomography (APT) analysis, and micromechanical testing and hardness measurement, etc.

The candidate will make an effort to establish a correlation between nanotwin density and macroscopic mechanical property relation in nanotwinned ceramics and, from the atomic level, explore and understand the nanotwin toughening mechanism. You will work in a dedicated team and have the opportunity to enhance your scientific career, including participation in national and international conferences.

Your Profile
  • Completed Master's study in Materials Sciences, Physics, or equivalent
  • Background in materials science, solid-state physics, or related subjects
  • We are seeking an independent, self-motivated, and team-oriented candidate
  • Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English are mandatory

Our Offer

We offer an international, ambitious environment for basic research-oriented candidates who want to perform cutting-edge research with access to advanced characterization facilities.

The appointment begins at the earliest possible date. We offer an annual gross of € 25.182,22 (part-time, 20h/week) according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

Please apply online including a motivation letter your CV and a complete publication list.

Application Deadline: February 28, 2025

The evaluation of candidates will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

Please note that only complete applications will be considered.

The Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) pursues a non-discriminatory employment policy and values equal opportunities, as well as diversity. Individuals from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.
